2010 - My Better Than Average Photos

2010 was my mold to better things, at least that's what I hoped in the beginning. It turned out to be a fantastic year. A year where I learned a lot about myself, what I'm capable of and also I get to meet more great individuals and probably discover more about my friends. Sounds so cliche but yeah.

What is shown below is my side of a story. I might not be that good in explaining things verbally, I guess it's best I show it by visual storytelling. All of the below are my viewpoints, to tell someone's story, on their happiest day... arranged in no particular order of favoritism (except the first few, haha).

I ended 2009 with a target that I'll do my 365 Project, discover myself and be someone. Of course, I didn't manage to keep up with the 365 Project probably because I felt that I needed more time to compose life in a day. I managed the other two though. Not bad. 2 out of 3.

Well, next year, my only resolution is to stay happy and make others happy while staying true to myself. That's all. I need.

Thanks to everyone who has supported me since Day 1. I truly appreciate all of your efforts to even "Like" my facebook page. Such an honor.

I know. This post have been long overdue and was supposed to be on my new site but God has other plans instead. It turns out that an error with a developer will cause another delay to the website, sadly.

So, at the moment, things will still stay over here. You could see I'm not really happy with it but oh well, I am contented that I could still update stuff over here.

This has gotta be one of my favourite weddings. I don't know how many hundred weddings I've shot since 2008 and it's hard to pick the best weddings I've shot but this is certainly one of it, if there would ever be a list.

48 Hour Film Fest - "Bogey"

King Julian scribbled titles on the paper. Words such as "doublecross" and "bogeyman" appeared, which I think was smart. I would have given some other lame ones.

That was at 11 pm.

At 1.45am, the script arrived. "Bogey" was our title. Was pretty stoked for the shooting actually.

The 48 Hour Film Fest is a gruelling competition. Reallly grinds every bit of energy and emotion from you. It was tiring. No wait, tiring is an understatement of an understatement. See, it doesn't even make sense.

I'm not sure if we'll ever upload the video... I mean, i'm proud we managed to finish on time(which was the best and worst part of the whole competition), but like bryanlyt said, the outcome was pretty hideous(please excuse the quality this time, everything was done in less than 48 hours!).

Below is the unofficial poster for it actually. Looks pretty good! But like most posters these days, what looks good at first glance doesn't look too good the second.

Having said that, I am super proud of my team members. We gave our fight, we did our best. We managed to qualify... only 24/38 teams managed to qualify(actually quite surprised Linus Chung and PhuturePhlowFilms withdrew).

I heard next year there's a 72 Hour National Film Comp. Can't wait! I'll do this again, given the chance.

So here I am, once again but not with a 60D review. I've purchased it and really quite glad how it all turned out.

As said in my previous post, I don't think music photography is my genre. I love weddings so much I can shoot weddings every single day of my life, seriously. But this wedding... this is special. I mean, how could someone be apart for so long as still maintain the love? Special.

If only I had something special to share too.

Someone one said, "when you have something special to share, share it with your close friends, family and loved ones". I regard my readers as close friends, really.

So thank you for all your support by reading my blog all these while. It means a lot.

I'm going through a major revamping of my own photography style... heck, I always change my style every once in a while. Sometimes I wonder if it's good if someone says "I can recognise this picture, this is so Raffi". It feels like it means that there's nothing new that I provide. So, I always try to change my style, angle and editing workflow until I find the near-perfect style.

I think I'm almost there, I really hope. Slowly but surely, Raffi.

Without it, i'll never know what i'm actually capable of. If all of you readers (If I have any) want to know, I kept lying to myself that I like Music Photography. I have came to realise that I actually have no interest in it. Below are probably my one of the not so good shots I've ever made.

I love music. I love photography. I thought those two could be combined but I just don't have the same feel when it comes to shooting other stuff like... weddings/portraits. Well, you can't have everything in life.

And for video... I guess i'll just stick to Music Videos & Events... oh, and weddings too.

Canon 60D Review 3

This is a review of the Canon 60D's Kit Lens with IS capabilities. The IS is surprisingly good. All of the shots were handheld and since I've never used IS before for video shooting, i'm surprised that the IS actually helps in video stabilisation. This kit lens rocks!

Having that said, if you happen to have a stabilizing system like a Glidecam and etc it is better to turn off the IS because that will only cause the IS to have what you call a "jello" effect. I'm still not sure why that happened but that's just my recommendation! But I'm surprised it did very well in handheld shots and that's the strong point of the IS. All of the shots for the video above was shot on a Canon EF 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS kit lens.

Canon 60D Review Part 2

"Eh, this LCD can pusing-pusing wan damn nice la!"

That was the words of a 500D user who clearly wonders why he bought that model when there are two far more superior models of SLR which is the Canon 550D and the super-awesome-newly-launched Canon 60D.

If you figure that the next few paragraphs will be very technical... I'm guessing then "Hi, you're at the WRONG page." because i'm going to give what I really experienced from the almost-two-weeks of using the Canon 60D.

First, I am going list down all the things I really do feel the 60D is worth the upgrade from the 50D.

Swivel LCD Screen

I know, this must seem like a non-relevant detail for the 60D or should never be materialised on a DSLR but I feel it's very useful especially when I shoot videos at angles where my eyes could not see the manual focus. Many times have this helped me to get the right focus without straining my eyes. Although this is not useful when using an external viewfinder, given that the viewfinder these days can be detached easily, i see this as no harm to the world of filmmaking.

Ergonomics

I heard comments from 50D users that the feel of it doesn't seem good enough for the upgrade. You know what, I feel that it's one of the best bodies from Canon in a while! it has a good grip, it fits perfectly into my hands and the buttons are really really easy to commute. I feel that the buttons were faster to reach and accessible than the 5D Mark II.

Set Function Button

Now I can set the buttons to maximise my options for other functions such as the white balance button there. Most probably this is also due to the fact that the white balance button is now missing so the SET button will be set as the white balance button for me.

In Camera RAW conversion

This is really really helpful! I have only Photoshop CS4 and the new Camera Raw doesn't support the new 60D... little did I know that this would actually be a really big help! it's fast, converts it with high quality plus it gives maximum control. AWESOME FEATURE! I've showed this in the last post so I'm not gonna cover this, and also how it links with the Creative Filters!

Have I mentioned that the iFCL metering system with 63-zone Dual-layer Metering Sensor produces awesome results? It's fairly accurate. Better than I expected.

Next, I'm gonna talk about the Kit Lens.

the Kit Lens I got was the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6. A relatively fast, sharp and probably a beginner's lens, I feel that the glass is fantastic though. Although it is hard to compare this with the Canon L Lenses lineup, but hey, it does the job when you need it.

I'd recommend beginners to grab this package. It's the cheapest and probably most valuable. It retails at RRP RM 3,799. Just a few hundred more than the 50D !

The other models you can purchase is the

1. Canon 60D (Body Only) RRP: RM 3,338.

2. Canon 60D (18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS) RRP: RM 4,299.

3. Canon 60D (18-200mm f.3.5-5.6 IS) RRP: RM 4,799.

Things I still haven't got used to...

The lock button for mode switch

I've tried to accustom myself to suit this setting but it's just not for me. I've shot for a few years now and I haven't changes the modes and even if i accidentally changed it, I would notice it instantly. I guess i'll get used after a while. It's just that the M mode and the Video mode is just too far apart! They should make it turn 360 degrees.

It gets taunting from higher level camera users.

I get annoyed when 7D & 5D Mark II users criticise this model completely without even giving it time to get used to the new system. I even get stares from 50D users who think that the 60D isn't much of an upgrade from the 50D. Well, the way I look at it, if you compare the price... it's actually way more valuable than the 50D. And for the higher end users... different models were made for different purposes. So deal with it guys!

No Micro Adjustment

Yes, no micro adjustment. I wish this had come true in this model. It would be a dream come true! But I guess they'll put it in the other cameras in the future. That system is totally rad!

No Intervalometer

Bring it to us already!

So, in conclusion if you are a beginner and you want to get a DSLR but with a better grip then this is the camera for you. and because having L lenses on it fits perfectly, in perfect i mean perfect balance and weight, this is the camera that would actually make sense. As for me, I am surely going to purchase this camera. 2 weeks is not enough, I need to own it! Oh yes, I made like a short video, not a short film, using this Canon 60D. Take a look at it and comment!

Canon 60D Review Part 1

This camera came as what I had expected; solid, wonderful ergonomics and just the perfect weight. Current 50D users may have been unhappy with the removal of the alloy body but trust me, this is not an issue per say.

It's very exciting this camera because it incorporates the best features of the Canon 550D and the 7D in a newly-designed body which makes an experienced user with Canon cameras feel quite lost at times (frustrating too I may say). But the new body and button layout was done for a reason and I will cover that in the second part of my review with the Canon 60D.

Let me just get towards the new development of the 60D over the 50D (which surprising is retailing for the same price in US). The most obvious new feature is the ever-awesome EOS Movies capability with a selection of frame rates and manual exposure control, really useful for fellow photographers cum indie filmmaker. Another notable new experience is the articulated 3" LCD screen (in the ratio of 3:2 similar to the 550D) which really helps in video recording especially with the low angles and such. I still haven't go through how the LCD could be of great help or a major distraction, I will cover that in another full hands-on review later on. One thing interesting the manual audio control too which incorporates from the 5D Mark II but with an added feature, a 'wind filter'. This again, will be tested to see its relevance to the system.

Now, for the photography part it is also very enlightening on what Canon has brought us. From what I've felt since yesterday using the camera, the autofocus system is somewhat better than the 50D. Probably because of the implementation of the cross-type AF at all the 9 points. I think they definitely have been more accurate than the 50D but I still think the Canon 7D sets the standard in autofocus system. I will again do another test with more details. Another great deal from the 60D is the wireless flash trigger. It is certainly useful without the need to buy a Pocket Wizard or a flash trigger. It is all done in camera!

The most interesting about the 60D is the In-Camera Raw Conversion. Yes, you can process RAW pictures in camera now! And there's also a new feature called Creative Filters which gives you effects like Grainy B&W, Toy Camera, Miniature Effect and Soft Focus! All of them are pretty great and below is an example of its usefulness.

I'm really looking forward to this 2 weeks of full testing with the camera, I would really want to a full test on the camera. I would probably give better examples in my final review. So far, it's been really impressive and I would seriously consider to buy this set after the review program.

I can't speculate on the price just yet but it is said to be released in the beginning of October, I'll probably mention about that in the next review with the testing of the kit lens too. Here's a test video from Sunday's event.

Mass Comm Olympics

Then it became MassColympics.

The pictures below, that was from last year, 2009. I was still quite new I guess. Only a few shots that i could accept today. Others were really... not up to my likings. But i kinda prefer how i used to have those "stalker" photos. aha. everyone has them.

That was the time of experimenting I guess, with my beloved D40. Armed with just a kitlens, i survived the assignment. Guess that makes me feel that now I have gone to far in photography that I can no longer turn back, I have to move forward.

So back to MassColympics. There's gonna be one this year! I heard it's gonna mash-up with SOC Media Carnival and it will be called "CommFest" ! should be something all masscommers must anticipate.

This wedding was like a almost two months ago. I know I need to update all my recent photos but I just have to many things to do that I don't really have the time to blog.

I love to write on my blog nowadays. The same thing can't be said about assignments though.

So, back to the wedding...

Firstly, I really love this wedding. It defines simplicity at its best. It's simple yet elegant, fun and memorable. I may not be in favour of the transparent tent but I still think it's pretty though not friendly to photographers.

And I love ferris lighting. And the stage. And the "wayang kulit". I just love it.

I like shooting people from various backgrounds. Status and money have never been an issue when it comes to photography. I'm always a firm believer that everyone is special, in their own way. From big name clients to the ordinary couple, it will always be different.

Maybe that's why I never seem to get bored with this. I grow and learn with each job. Contrary to my previous hobbies, photography has never let me down and I never want to let it go. I can't stand going through my life without listening to the click of the shutter when I press it.

It was a risk, getting in this business. The amount of investment needed for it... let's just say it isn't exactly a cheap hobby. But I shall say, after almost 3 years clicking the shutter, I'm very satisfied with it. I wouldn't say I'm satisfied with my work because I'm never satisfied. Probably only satisfied for a few days but that's about it. My mind set is always... "My next one will be better."

I lead my life following a quote of a masterclass, Karl Lagerfeld. He once said "I'm never content with what I do. I live in a sort of permanent dissatisfaction. I think that's the secret to doing things well."

And I agree.

David Choi in Singapore Part 2

So, this is the second part of David Choi. This was his performance pictures.

I've run out of words to explain this guy's capabilities. Just read his biography! With millions of views and almost half a million of subscribers on YouTube, (I only have a mere 10, 11?) it was something I look forward to.

I'm glad I was inches away from him. Funny story how I got so close.

Was wandering around Esplanade after AHM's soundcheck. That was around like almost 4.30. I was thinking, "Damn, I missed David Choi's showcase but never mind, I'll drop by the Library anyway." I was gonna find the Foo Sisters anyway.

Reached there, saw hundreds there for King Ly Chee. Never heard of em before. Must be a great band, I thought. Who would've known that all of them were waiting for Ah Choi.

He was, late.

Lucky me the Foo Sisters were at the front row, so, I pushed my way through. I know, bad ethics. It was worth it though.

So his interview/showcase at Library@Esplanade ended at almost 6 and after that all of em crowded around him. It was madness. Totally crazy. His performance was due at 7 but even at 6, the area was half-covered.

Never knew someone from YouTube could gain popularity like this. Yet, he remained humble and obliged to every photo request. The young generation should learn from this dude. He keeps his head low, gets positive attention, channels his talent to something good, makes people happy.

That's a real success story from YouTube. Having said that, I still wish to meet a few more YouTube stars. Mostly the Asians. People like Wong Fu Productions, Ryan Higa, KevJumba, Cathy Nguyen *melts*, AJ Rafael, Kina Grannis and so on!

I'm actually quite sure I'll meet them one day.

The Trip To Singapore

Firstly, It was a good getaway, thanks for the opportunity.

I've learned a lot in this trip. This was like the only trip that I've actually appreciated Malaysia.

I'm not much of a writer, I know. But I like to share. I like to share stories of my life. When you read this it seems like a conversation because... maybe it is. I'm not sure how writers write to like engage with your readers. I'm not doing that, I know. I'm just talking.

So back to Singapore. I'd like to thank certain parties that brought me to Singapore for Baybeats 2010. It was a thorough learning experience. I enjoyed it. Every single part of it.

I actually like the professionalism of the organising team of Baybeats. They were efficient, fast and there were no delays (5 minutes doesn't count). Heck, the event was free but it was better than most events over here, entertainment wise.

But I still miss the Malaysian bands. They sound better (No offense, "Sporeans"). So, what made me appreciate Malaysia more is its ability to produce good music. Our ethics of gig-ing is also way ahead than our neighbours. But sad to say, Sporean music are more diversified. Probably because of their ruling system, they give more... freedom.

I still love Malaysia, don't worry.

Having said that, the views in Singapore was amazing the other day. Singapore is basically my 2nd home but I've never seen nice views like I did the other day. Breath. Taking. Lah.

I got confused on which pics to choose from for the first two. So, I choose both.

P.S doesn't the 5th pic look like there was a UFO flying? *sigh* lame.

David Choi in Singapore, Baybeats 2010 !

This is something surreal.

I mean, you had to be there, you just had to.

None of the photos below can describe how awesome David Choi was, how it was like to be able to meet him, talk and ask questions.

David Choi. Who would have wondered, the songwriter who brings you tunes like "That Girl", "Won't Even Start" (both of which are emo songs) would be able to come up and tickle everyone in Library@Esplanade with his jokes.

Never once I thought in my life this YouTube star will be in front of me, singing. live. But it was meant to be. I guess. But credits to Wong Fu Productions because without them I wouldn't know who David Choi was anyway.

I love my new toy! it generates stars and everything in space (this is exaggerated). I've not updated my blog for a while, I know.

The reason is because, I took a break from photography. I wanted to take this break to see the world again, I don't want to be caught up 100% with my photography. It's contagious. Some photographer once said "Sometimes you have to go out and see the world and live life, love and cherish those moments then come back as a better photographer than has seen more things in life". Okay, I made that up. I wrote it word by word. That's just my philosophy.

I always take breaks because I need one. I don't like to go through a patch where you see nothing new in your photos. But there's always a patch where you keep doing the same thing, the same angle, the same style, the same post-processing. I want to change that. When you get through that phase, you get better. That's what I feel.

Now I'm back and as Roy said, it's better to have fun content than to be competitive! So yes, I'm gonna love my work and job and try to make people happy and so, i'll be coming up with a whole lot of new concepts and new style of photos, hopefully. :)

a trip to Singapore for the weekend. Have I told you how much I love it there? I still love Malaysia though. So, met up with the Foo sisters, which felt weird because it's like an "OMG-it's-a-Malaysian" moment.

One thing I want Malaysia to have, School of the Arts! You should have seen the view at night. It was inexplicably gorgeous! Too bad i didn't have my wide angle with me. Next trip (coming end of the month), promise.

So let's go Singapore!

As I grow more matured in photography, I began to love capturing these small little human. They are naive and at least they're honest among other living things. I would love to shoot kids and family portraits, but most of my friends don't have kids at the moment and I don't expect you to! This is just a reminder for all of you who are going to have kids in the future, portraiture sessions are always open.

I have so many wedding shots that I would always love to share it here but it seems like I always have this syndrome where "no time to go through the pics la" is always on my mind. I really need to sit down and start doing a Wedding portfolio because indeed it is my first love in photography. It will always be something I put my priority in.

As i said, i love music gigs and finally had a chance to be the OP for one! glad with it. Cravecast is awesome! they've done something that nobody in Malaysia has done before, live recording and putting it up on their own charts, CraveCharts! visit them yawwww. and the more you listen to a band's song, they will stand a higher chance to perform next month for Vol. 2 of Make A Scene!

is very precious. i photograph something to freeze moments i may never get to go to again. someone once told me to take pics of people you love a lot. and i do, take pics of people i love a lot. at least if they're not there anymore, there's something left of them to hold on to. a moment that will never repeat itself.

i'd do anything for you.

i'm always tempted to say "i do this to make my mom proud" when people ask me why i do the things that i do. i always want her to be proud of me, the things that i do... the things that i get involved in.

the feeling when your mom is happy for what you've done is more than what the heart can express. sometimes it doesn't always happen that way though. i disappoint her, she shed tears for me. i know i was never the "child of the century" or maybe a potential winner of "best child" so i guess, mistakes are made but i've learned from em.

i always have something to talk to her. we seldom argued. i know that she knows that i've done stupid things in life. but all she gave me is support and i'm gratefully thankful for that mama. i know you won't be reading this as you don't even know i have a blog. all i want to say is that i would never trade anything in exchange for you.

i will always be with you in your days which are filled with happiness, joy and laughter.

style guide

i don't really have a style. i don't have a specific angle. the angles you see in my pics are not precisely calculated, it comes when i see an image, and i just want to capture it in that direction.

normally i know what i want in an image, especially the treatment when i shoot it. but yet again, sometimes it depends on my mood at the time, so post-processing is always different.

to be really honest, anyone can photograph anything. i believe everyone can take beautiful pictures and really, i don't really mind. i don't see it as a competition, i'd like to welcome everyone to take beautiful picture with any equipment they have and need not be shy with it.

in case you just noticed, i like to take candids. it's just a part of my photographic sense. and i love weird compositions.

Nordic Film Festival

What I love about capturing people of different races? They instantly give your photos a new feel, a new touch, especially shooting these people from the Nordic continent, I feel like I went there and snap photos for their event!

Btw, Nordic Film Fest is happening this week! TWO MOVIES IN A DAY! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?! 5.30 and 7.30. see YA there!

On another note, I want to shoot people of different races from now on, broaden my portfolio.

Out of frustration with the new campus, the heat that surfaces the skin and mighty cold air-cond of the library(not so true, 24/7 Study is colder), i think there's more than what's shown in the new campus.

I miss LCS, I do, but i guess this is a new beginning, learning to adapt to changes, be it good or bad, towards higher level or sadly in this case, lower.

Maybe I should give a chance to this campus, maybe i don't. But I guess I will try to make it as comfortable as comfortable can get though that won't be possible until I graduate. Having said that, I would just see the good side of the new campus rather than criticizing all the time. I guess if we stopped whining, everything will be slightly, maybe a tiny bit, better.

i miss concerts.

Lighting is very important in photography. Different angles of lighting can give different effect, different weight to the picture.

Don't stare into her eyes too long, it may cause some undesired effect. Like the Medusa effect.
